ANYTIME FITNESS
As more and more people begin exercise programs, many ask, “What is the best time of day for me to exercise?” Research has shown that the best time of day for your body, is mid-afternoon around 3-4 pm. It mainly has to do with your body’s hormone levels and biorhythms. If you are like me, then between 3-4pm you are one of two places; at work or spending time with your family. So the problem is a common one, making (not finding) time to exercise. That is why my exercise programs revolve around the idea of anytime fitness. Work out whenever and wherever you can fit it in. In today’s hustle and bustle society it is the only schedule proof system.
Following an effective exercise routine is easy; you just have to be a creative scheduler. By now everyone knows about going to the gym and doing a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise for improved health. Let’s not kid ourselves, consistent moderate physical activity is the most effective way to really improve fitness. Part of the anytime fitness mindset is finding the time of day that works best for you to fit these workouts in. If you are a morning person then I suggest you get to the gym first thing. Take this time for yourself before the stresses of the day get in the way. For the early riser, anytime fitness means your day starts with a good workout before the demands of work and family derail your best intentions. If mornings aren’t your cup of tea, then an after work schedule will be best for you. If you are disciplined enough to walk away from a desk full of papers and a computer full of email, more power to you! Your anytime fitness is after work. The point is this; don’t try to stick to a workout schedule that was created by someone who is not in tune with your daily responsibilities and stresses. It will never work in the long term. It is your workout routine, your life and your opportunity to improve your health with your idea of anytime fitness.
Going to the gym is not the only part of the anytime fitness equation. Here is the bread and butter (no pun intended) of the anytime fitness exercise program. Your personal anytime fitness program should Incorporate more movement into everything you do each day. Remember that every movement burns calories and it is your total calorie expenditure that will help you maintain a healthy body weight. Weight management is based on the simple formula of calories in vs. calories out. Over the course of 1 week, your goal should be to burn slightly more calories then you take in. This will lead to a healthier and more productive life. A good anytime fitness goal to shoot for each day is to decrease your caloric intake by about 400 calories and increase calorie expenditure by 600 calories. This will put you in a calorie deficit of 1000 calories a day and 7000 each week which is the equivalent of 2 pounds. This will make your anytime fitness program safe, effective and help you achieve longterm success.
There are some very simple and general rules that apply to make the anytime fitness program a part of your everyday life. In a nut shell, never lie down when you can sit, never sit when you can stand and never walk when you can run. Also, never take the closest parking space at work or at the shopping mall and never, ever take an escalator or elevator when you can take the stairs. While these things won’t do much to improve your fitness, they will help to burn calories which, in turn, will help you to manage your weight. As we age we seem to always take the easy way out, looking for the most efficient way to do things and burn the fewest number of calories. This works in sharp contrast to the anytime fitness idea. We didn’t do this as kids and most of us didn’t have weight problems as children.
This leads me to my final point. In the opening paragraph, I mentioned being in one of two places between 3-4pm. If you are lucky enough to be spending time with your family (especially children) in the afternoon then get them to move and move with them. With the incidence of childhood obesity on the rise, more parents need to help make exercise a regular part of their kid’s lives. Kids understand the idea of anytime fitness without even knowing what they are doing. It just comes naturally. And if you can get them moving then you might as well move with them, this is the best example of anytime fitness. Go on family hikes, bike rides and strolls. It will be quality time for you and your children that you will both cherish forever. Want to see your children’s faces light up? Tonight after dinner announce to your family that you are all going to take a walk together. While out on your walk, allow your kids to explore. Watch them be amazed by the world around them and simply enjoy the fact that while you are bringing your family together you are also on your way to a healthier you. Anytime fitness for you and your family will improve everyone's quality of life.
