FITNESS LIFE
Developing and maintaining a fitness life is about balance. In this fast-paced time, we too often lose sight of what is important and occasionally need to sit back and re-assess our priorities. Americans, in general, are too easily influenced by material goods and the latest goings on in the lives of Hollywood stars and sports heroes. The end result is that our health becomes an afterthought. Far too many people make the assumption that there will be time to make changes, improve their life and start being happy. Well...that time is now.
One of the most important things you can do for yourself is develop a fitness life. It's impact will be far reaching into areas of your life you never expected. Increasing your health, by improving your fitness and nutrition, will help make you a better husband/wife, father/mother, brother/sister, friend, co-worker, etc. It will improve the way you feel about yourself, improve your sex life and the overall quality of your life. Are you starting to get the idea? It sounds pretty good, right? Well, it is easier than you think. You may have tried in the past to get more exercise or change your diet and failed. Do you want to succeed? Then change your goals.
A common mistake people make when attempting to achieve a fitness life is having unrealistic expectations. Setting goals that are too high, not giving yourself enough time to achieve your goals or trying implement some Hollywood star's fitness and nutritional program into your real world schedule are some of the ways that people set their programs up for failure.
GOAL SETTING
When setting goals for your fitness life, think baby steps. Sure, following the latest fad diet may help you lose 20 pounds in the next month. But of the people who follow those types of programs, how many of them keep the weight off for a year or more? Not many. To ensure long term success, set weight loss goals of about 4-5 pounds per month. The necessary changes to your lifestyle won't be so dramatic as to make you feel deprived of eating anything that tastes good or make you feel like you must exercise 4 hours each day.
An easy way to implement small changes in your eating plan is to try to cut out one bad thing each meal. For example, when having a baked potato, you can enjoy a small serving of sour cream with it but only if you cut out the butter or the bacon bits. Get rid of the idea that you deserve to eat whatever you want and try to eat with moderation. Similarly, when exercising aim for 30 minutes of continuous movement each day. Take a long walk if you can't get to the gym. If you can't get in 30 minutes of continuous exercise then make small changes to your daily routine in order to burn up some calories. Here are a few ideas:
Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator
At the mall, park in the furthest parking space from the entrance and not the closest
While on the phone, either at work or at home, stand or move around the room instead of sitting
If you have children, actually play with them (what a brilliant idea!). Don't just send them out to play in the yard or at the park, get involved-you will both love it.
TIME
When attempting to live a fitness life, remember that it is just that, a life. Not a weekend, week or month. Implement an exercise and eating program that is realistic for the rest of your life. Don't expect earth shattering results with this approach. You may hear of others who are making huge strides with their "quick and easy weight loss plan". Ignore them and certainly don't share your progress with them. They will only attempt to undermine you by telling you that your program is not as good as theirs and that you are wasting your time. Remember that slow weight loss and a moderate exercise program are the safest ways to long term success and a healthier you.
REAL WORLD RESULTS
The next time you hear about some Hollywood star getting into incredible shape for a role remember that there was a huge supporting cast and thousands of dollars working behind the scene. Just about anyone can lose weight and get in better shape if they have access to a live-in chef and spend 4 hours a day with a personal trainer. This probably is not your reality.
Here is what is:
working long hours each day to meet the demands of you r j ob or family
living with huge amounts of stress trying to keep up in this fast paced world
getting less sleep than your body needs to function optimally each day
These are things that Hollywood types don't deal with. They may work hard at what they do but they have access to help that the average person cannot afford. Don't compare yourself and the results of your diet and exercise program with someone who has their own chef, personal trainer, make-up artist and hair stylist. Just try to create a better you by adopting a fitness life.
One final thought on creating a fitness life. Balance, balance, balance. Yes, you r j ob is exciting and demanding and gives you a sense of purpose. So does your family. You wouldn't be able to work or care for your family without your health. It is easy to get caught up with high salaries, fancy cars, expensive vacations and other material goods. In addition to family obligations, your kids homework and soccer schedules. Having all of these things usually means that major sacrifices were necessary. The one thing that is most often sacrificed is your health. Now, tell me, what can be more valuable than that? Without it we can't enjoy all of the good things life has to offer.
