FITNESS MACHINE


















Over the last two decades, there has been so much talk in the media about the importance of exercise it is no longer a question of whether or not to do it but how exactly do you choose the appropriate exercise for your goal.  Adding to the confusion is all of the conflicting information relating to the type of exercise and the proper amount necessary to find the balance between progress and injury.  This article will focus on the type of fitness machine you should choose to achieve your fitness goal.

 

Never before has the general public been able to choose between so many different types of fitness machines to satisfy their individual needs.  In addition to industrial strength commercial equipment, manufacturers are now producing light-commercial and in-home models to meet the demand for all areas of fitness and price points.  Many people wonder which fitness machine will be the best for them and the answer depends on what their fitness goal is.  Rest assured, there is an answer for you, but first you must ask yourself a few questions,

 

Do you hate exercising indoors and prefer to do all of your workouts outside?
What are your training goals?  Weight management?  Strength gain?  Fat loss?

The answer to these questions will help you determine the exact fitness machine that is best for you.  For most the answer lies in whether you are training for strength gains (which would force you to use a resistance training fitness machine) or weight management and/or fat loss (which would have you spending the bulk of your exercise time using cardiovascular equipment).  The outdoor enthusiast is going to have be much more creative in his/her exercise choice.  If this is you, your fitness machine is your body and all of the possible exercises you can perform using your own body weight.  The possibilities are endless, so don’t despair. 

In order to increase muscle strength and lean body mass, the two most important concepts to remember are overload and recovery.  Muscular adaptations are dependent upon placing a load on the muscle that is more difficult than anything they have ever experienced.  This forces the muscle to change on the cellular level, provided you allow it adequate recovery time.  In most cases this will be a minimum of 48 hours between workouts.  By using resistance fitness machines the average person can expect to see increase in muscle strength in as little as 4-6 weeks.

If weight management and fat loss are you goals then you will be spending a lot of time on fitness machines like treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical trainers.  Fat burning workouts are low in intensity and long in duration.  The ideal scenario would be 4-5 workouts each week lasting anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes in length.  The easiest way to measure the appropriate intensity level is to make sure that while exercising you work out hard enough to break a sweat but never so hard that it becomes difficult to talk.  This is a very general guideline but short of investing in a heart rate monitor it is the simplest method. 

Regardless of your training goal, it is always recommended that you consult with a qualified personal trainer first.  If you are going to invest your time and energy in improving your health it makes sense to ensure that you are maximizing your effort while minimizing your risk for injury.  Even if you have put your own training program together, getting a personal trainer’s opinion on your exercise schedule and choice of fitness machines will help keep you on the path towards improved fitness.
