ZONE DIET
Right now, millions of people are "dieting". They are trying every diet from Hollywood to South Beach and some others that are yet to make national headlines. Will they succeed in losing the weight? Yes. Well, maybe. Actually, no. You see, anyone following today's latest fad diet is just setting themselves up for long term failure. That is, of course, unless you are a strict adherent to the Zone Diet, one of the only diet plans that can work for the long term.
The problem with most diet plans is that they make big claims for huge results in the least amount of time possible. They sound too good to be true, and in most cases, are. Here is why. Fad diets all follow a common theme; they are very low calorie eating plans that usually come close to completely eliminating carbohydrate intake in an effort to "trick" your body to instead burn existing fat stores for energy. Unfortunately your body is too smart to be tricked into anything. Weight management is a very simple formula, burn more calories than you take in and you will lose weight. If you take in more calories than you burn you will gain weight. Remember this simple rule and you will achieve success-every time! Problem is effective weight loss is neither quick nor easy, two words that people love to hear.
Enter the Zone Diet . While some have touted this eating plan to be nothing more than another fad diet, the Zone Diet plan has proved to have staying power. Reason is, it is scientifically based and it actually works. The best part is that it is a reasonable program that preaches moderation and making the commitment to a life long change in the way you eat.
Any diet will work as long as you continue to suffer through the deprivation, both physiological and psychological. The failure comes in when you go off the diet. It is at this point that you are now faced with having to deal with all of the negative effects of the diet. Due to the low calorie nature of all fad diets, your body experiences nothing more than starvation which results in a dramatic decrease in lean body mass and very little change in body fat. The end result is a decrease in the rate at which your body burns calories and the subsequent return of the weight you lost and a little extra, just for good measure. Sound familiar? It's not your fault. You are not doomed by your "bad genetics" or "weakness" or inability to have a little self control. You have just been given bad information. That all ends here.
The basic premise of the Zone Diet plan is to consume all of the macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) in moderation; 40%-30%-30%, respectively, in order to safely decrease body fat and increase your quality of life. Doing so allows you to maintain, and even increase, your lean body mass which is vital to increasing your metabolism. The Zone Diet actually accomplishes this without telling you that there are foods that are absolutely forbidden. It all comes down to portion size and making the best food choices possible. The result is a gradual weight loss that is sustainable without the cravings and feelings of deprivation that seemed to doom all of your previous dieting attempts.
The Zone Diet starts off by calculating your current lean body mass. This is simply your muscles, bones and organs. Calculating your daily caloric intake based on this number allows you to feed only the healthy tissue of your body. To safely and effectively lose weight you must strive to be in a calorie deficit. This is accomplished either by decreasing your caloric intake or increasing physical activity. This means you are ending the day with slightly fewer calories than your body needs to maintain normal metabolic function. It is advised by most nutritionists not to be in the negative by more than 500 calories per day in order to lose a pound of fat per week. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories and most studies show that if you lose any more weight than two pounds per week you will start to metabolize muscle rather than the fat.
Following Zone Diet recipes means eating in small, frequent meals throughout the day, each of which contain the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. No foods are off limits but there are obviously better choices than others. Which foods you choose and the manner in which you prepare them help to determine the amount you can eat. The Zone Diet menu plans looks at foods as if they are drugs that have a specific, and sometimes dramatic, effect on your body. The science behind the program is not complicated but for some it may be too much to comprehend. To ensure success with your Zone Diet meal plan, it is advised you seek the guidance of a professional. Most Registered Dieticians and some personal trainers will have the knowledge base to help you in your quest to reach and maintain a healthy weight.
